Round 3 Recap – Truist Championship Tightens Heading into Sunday

Moving Day at the Truist Championship lived up to its name, as the Philadelphia Cricket Club's Wissahickon course saw dramatic shifts in momentum and leaderboard shakeups that have set the stage for a wild Sunday finale.

Big Movers

Hideki Matsuyama made the biggest statement of the day, firing a blistering 63 to climb back into contention after a relatively quiet second round. His iron play was absolutely dialed in, and he vaulted himself into serious Sunday territory with a three-day total of -10.

Corey Connors also surged with a 66, showcasing his signature precision off the tee and with the irons. The Canadian has quietly inserted himself among the leaders heading into the final round and looks poised for a late charge.

Justin Thomas continued his rock-solid week with a smooth 66. JT looks confident, balanced, and locked in with the flatstick. With three rounds in the 60s, he’s trending toward a potential win if he can maintain the form on Sunday.

Shane Lowry, Tommy Fleetwood, and Tony Finau all posted matching 67s, keeping themselves very much in the hunt. Each has shown flashes of brilliance this week, and their Saturday consistency bodes well for a potential low number on Championship Sunday.

Holding Steady

Jordan Spieth delivered another consistent 68 — his second straight — and while not overly flashy, it’s enough to keep him lurking just outside the leaders. The putter has been streaky, but if he gets hot early tomorrow, he’ll be in the mix.

Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay turned in workmanlike 69 and 70 respectively. They’ll need something special Sunday to catch fire, but they’re still hanging around.

Slipping Back

Denny McCarthy led after Round 1, but his slide continued with a 74 in Round 3. After opening with a 62, he’s played the next 36 holes in +5 — tough to watch for anyone who picked him expecting a breakout win.

Collin Morikawa followed up his electric opening round 63 with back-to-back 72s. His ball striking remains sharp, but the scoring has cooled off considerably.

Brian Harman and Russell Henley also lost ground, each posting 72s of their own and fading from realistic contention barring something extraordinary tomorrow.

Notable Exit

Justin Rose officially withdrew before Round 3 after a tough 77 in Round 2.

Leaderboard Buzz

Heading into the final day, there’s no clear favorite — just a bunched-up group of elite names within a few shots of each other. With firm greens, tight fairways, and unpredictable pressure, Sunday at Wissahickon is set to be a slugfest.

Look for Hideki, JT, Shane, and Fleetwood to bring the firepower — but don’t count out a Spieth surge or a surprise from someone just outside the top ten.

Get your snacks ready, folks. This one’s going to the wire.
